If you’re looking for a delicious sweet treat that you won’t feel guilty eating? This delicious Tanghulu Chinese candied fruit recipe is irresistible and packs a punch of sweetness that won’t totally put a dent in your diet.

Ever since I was a little girl, my mom would always serve fresh-cut fruits as a dessert instead of traditional pies and cakes. It was one of my fondest memories, and I can still taste the fresh cold fruits like it was yesterday.

Now, all desserts are good desserts, but I still have a soft spot for fruits. That’s why I wanted to make this delicious Tanghulu recipe and share with you a little bit of my sweetest memories from my childhood.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of white sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 8 oz strawberries
  • wooden skewers

Directions

Wash your strawberries under cold water thoroughly. Then, pat dry with a paper towel and set them aside.

Place the wooden skewers through the ends of the strawberries by stabbing through the leafy parts. You can use one fruit per skewer or up to three per wooden skewer.

In a saucepan, add water and sugar. Stir it up the bring it to a light boil. Be sure to stir constantly or the sugar can burn easily.

Boil the sugar-water mixture for about 5-10 minutes or until the candy reaches around 300 degrees F.

If you don’t have a candy thermometer, you can use this trick. Take a spoon and dip it into the mixture. Then, immediately dip the spoon into ice water. If the candy mixture hardens, it’s ready. If it’s still sticky, it needs to get hotter.

Dip the strawberry skewer in the hot sugar water candied mixture and cover the entire strawberry. Take the strawberry out for 1 second then dip again for an extra thick coating.

Place the strawberries on parchment paper or a baking sheet.

The strawberries should harden immediately and can be enjoyed as soon as possible. You can also store them in the refrigerator and serve cold.
